What Does AI Know About Me?
Here's a question worth asking:
If a prospective client asked AI about you today, what would it find?
They might ask something as simple as:
“Who is Jane Smith in Victoria? What kind of financial advisor is she? Who does she work with? Does she specialize in retirement planning?”
AI can increasingly help people research financial questions and information about professionals. And it doesn't just rely on what you tell it directly. It can draw on information that's available online.
That makes your online presence more important — not less.
AI can't find what isn't there.
If your website hasn't been updated in five years, your bio is buried somewhere on a company website, and your only online presence is a LinkedIn profile, there may not be much for a prospective client — or an AI system — to work with.
That's not necessarily a problem if you're relying entirely on referrals and existing clients.
But if you're hoping to attract new clients, it's worth thinking about what someone would actually learn if they searched for you.
Start with the basics.
Your website should make the important things easy to find:
- Who you are
- Where you work
- What you do
- Who you work with
- What areas you specialize in
- How someone can contact you
It should also give people a sense of you.
A professional photograph. A little bit about your experience. The reasons you chose this profession. The kinds of clients you enjoy working with.
Those things may not answer a financial question, but they can answer a much more important question for a prospective client:
“Is this someone I should talk to?”
It's not just about AI.
Of course, people aren't only asking AI.
Someone may still Google your name after getting a referral from a friend. A prospective client may see your name at a community event and look you up. Someone may be comparing several advisors and visiting their websites before making a decision.
In all of those situations, your website is doing the same job.
It's giving someone enough information to decide whether they want to take the next step.
You don't need to become an AI expert.
You don't need to understand how AI searches the internet, how large language models work or how to optimize every sentence on your website for an algorithm.
But you should know what your online presence says about you.
Is the information current? Is it accurate? Does it clearly explain what you do? Does it make you look like the advisor you want prospective clients to see?
And perhaps most importantly:
If someone — human or AI — is looking for an advisor like you, is there enough information online for them to find you?
Take a look at your own digital footprint.
Try searching your own name. Then try asking an AI about yourself.
You may be surprised by what comes up — and by what doesn't.
You don't need to control everything that's said about you online. But you can make sure that the most important information is accurate, current and easy to find.
Is your website ready for that?
You don't need a complicated website. You need one that makes it easy for the right people to find you, understand what you offer and decide that you're worth contacting.
That's what we do.
